10 Years of Watchmaking Excellence: The Vario Story

When we look at the thriving landscape of independent watchmaking today, it’s easy to take for granted the bold microbrands that helped shape it. A decade ago, the watch world could often feel a bit repetitive—awash with the same safe choices and expected colourways. Enter Vario.

On March 31, 2016, this visionary brand burst onto the scene, successfully crowdfunding its first collection of graphic watch straps. Vario was born from a simple but powerful idea: your watch should be a reflection of who you are. This ethos was perfectly captured in their very first tagline, Wear Your Personality.

From Custom Straps to Vintage-Inspired Timepieces

Those early Vario straps were all about upgrading your everyday carry, offering enthusiasts a way to inject personal flair into standard wristwatches. But as the Vario community rapidly grew, so did the brand’s ambition. Listening closely to collectors around the globe, they steadily expanded their horizons, moving beyond accessories to design their very own vintage-inspired timepieces.

Over the past ten years, Vario has successfully launched seven distinct watch collections. Each lineup draws inspiration from an era when watchmaking was celebrated just as much for its beauty as its utility.

But Vario doesn’t simply copy the past; they masterfully reinterpret it. Their enduring goal has been to resurrect the thoughtful elegance of historical watch design while injecting a distinct modern twist, allowing these timepieces to stand proudly in the contemporary world.

Milestones, Accolades, and Meaningful Details

The Vario journey has been marked by impressive milestones that prove the power of independent design. In 2024, the team moved into their own dedicated office—a physical testament to how far this passion project has travelled.

They’ve shipped their meticulously crafted products to over 120 countries, built lasting friendships with fellow makers and content creators, and hosted “Unplug & Wind” get-togethers to physically bring the watch community together.

In 2025, the brand’s ingenuity was globally recognised when their reversible VERSA watch took home a prestigious iF Design Award, proving that small brands can indeed make massive, meaningful contributions to the design world.

But what truly defines Vario isn’t its growing scale; it’s the sheer intention behind the products. They design for the discerning collector who notices the minutiae.

Take the A11-S Solar field watch, for example. Its small-seconds disc was implemented because many enthusiasts dislike the visual stutter of a ticking quartz seconds hand, yet still want the satisfaction of seeing the dial come alive. These quiet, deeply considered design decisions are the hallmark of a Vario timepiece.

A New Chapter: Time Reimagined

As Vario’s designs have matured over the last decade, so has their underlying philosophy. Vintage inspiration was never meant to be a strict limitation; it was a starting point. This natural evolution has birthed a brand new chapter for the brand: Time Reimagined.

This new era isn’t about abandoning horological history, but continuing it. Vario views the past as a solid foundation to build upon. After all, every great era of watchmaking was once experimental and forward-looking.

By studying vintage design language and reinterpreting it through a modern lens—utilising new materials, new movements, and fresh perspectives—they are finding new ways to express time.

This philosophy shines brightly in creations like the 1918Medic, featuring a pulsometer scale that never actually existed on original 1910s medical watches—it’s Vario’s vision of what could have been. Similarly, the NAVI Single Hand completely challenges the fundamental way we read hours and minutes.

Time Reimagined is a pledge to keep pushing form and function forward. Even when heavily inspired by the past, a Vario watch is designed to feel relevant, purposeful, and thoroughly alive.

Backed by a fiercely loyal community of collectors, customers, and collaborators, Vario’s first ten years have been nothing short of spectacular. Here at The Coolector, we can’t wait to see what they build next.
