orget everything you thought you knew about rooftop tents. Mammoth Overland, a subsidiary of Vashion Aircraft (yes, those guys), has just unveiled the SKL – or “Skull” – their inaugural rooftop camper concept, and it’s a game-changer. This isn’t some flimsy fabric flapping in the wind; the SKL is constructed entirely from robust, painted high-strength aluminum, boasting zero tent material. Think of it as a rugged, self-contained sleeping pod that happens to live on your vehicle’s roof.

But the innovation doesn’t stop at its bulletproof-esque construction. The SKL packs a serious punch when it comes to power, featuring a substantial 208-Amp-hour battery pack integrated right into its roof structure, thanks to two solid-state Renogy 104-Amp-hour lithium-ion batteries. Pre-wired for solar panels that can be easily attached to its hefty 500-pound capacity roof rack, the SKL allows you to charge those onboard batteries with solar or shore power, making it a true off-grid powerhouse capable of running both interior and exterior electronics.

According to Mammoth Overland President Scott Taylor, the SKL was born from a simple yet brilliant question: “What if a trailer and rooftop tent had a baby?” The SKL takes the most beloved features of their wildly successful HV, ELE, TL, and WLY trailers and elevates them – literally – to the roof of your rig. More than just a place to sleep, the SKL is essentially a portable power station you can comfortably bed down in.

Measuring a generous 89 inches long and 59 inches wide, the SKL offers sleeping dimensions akin to a king-size mattress in length and somewhere between a queen and a full in width – plenty of room for two adults to stretch out and get a good night’s sleep after a day of adventure.

Traditional rooftop tents and campers often compromise on insulation, leaving you shivering on cold nights or sweltering under the summer sun. The SKL throws that notion out the window with an impressive trailer-like R5 insulation rating – for context, most campers hover around R0. This highly insulated, white-painted aluminum structure naturally regulates temperature, keeping you comfortable in any season.

However, for those who crave extra airflow, a roof-mounted three-speed electric fan can be operated to either draw air in or push it out. Interior lighting is thoughtfully provided by built-in porthole windows (three on each side) as well as dual interior light strips, all powered by the onboard battery pack. For illuminating the trail or your campsite, two auxiliary flood lights are mounted on either side of the camper.

While the SKL concept recently made its public debut at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, the production version is slated to be unveiled later in 2025, at which point final specifications and pricing will be announced. One thing is clear: the Mammoth Overland SKL isn’t just another rooftop tent; it’s a robust, energy-rich, and incredibly well-thought-out overland sleeping solution that’s poised to redefine rooftop camping as we know it. Get ready for the rooftop revolution.
