Masterminded by the incredibly talented collaborative team of Ark-Shelter and ARCHEKTA, this fully functional weekend dwelling measures a mere 20 square meters.
Situated at the picturesque edge of the Zlatý Roh vineyards, perched high above Devín Castle, it offers sweeping, uninterrupted views across the rolling vines toward the sun setting over the Austrian Alps.

A Masterclass in Radical Openness
When you are working with just 20 square meters of floor space, avoiding a claustrophobic atmosphere is the ultimate architectural challenge.
The designers conquered this obstacle through a bold concept of radical, transformative openness. Two entire sides of the structure feature brilliant fold-down terraces. When lowered, they reveal expansive sliding glass walls protected by integrated shading screens.
This design completely blurs the boundary between the cozy interior and the rugged exterior. Most of the daily living unfolds right in this threshold.
When fully opened, the interior seamlessly spills out onto the decking, optically and functionally multiplying the usable living space and ensuring an immediate, unbroken connection with the surrounding wilderness.
Transforming Spaces and Mindful Rituals
Despite its micro-proportions, the internal layout is astonishingly well-equipped. Tucked behind the main living zone is a sleek, compact kitchenette, leading through to a full bathroom complete with a shower.
One of our absolute favourite design details is the bespoke concrete sink. It is positioned directly within a window frame gazing out at the dense forest—a deliberate, mindful gesture engineered to slow down your morning routine and reconnect you with nature.
As dusk settles, the cabin reveals its most ingenious trick. The space effortlessly transforms to accommodate the night. A pendant lamp hanging from the ceiling doubles as a mechanical trigger; pulling its extended cable lowers a hidden sleeping area.
To keep the aesthetic impeccably clean during the day, the designers omitted a bulky fixed staircase, opting instead for a discreet, retractable ladder built directly into the custom cabinetry. Up top, the loft offers a deeply intimate, solid-roofed cocoon, pierced only by a perfectly placed skylight for late-night stargazing.
Uncompromising Off-Grid Engineering
A beautiful cabin is useless if it freezes you out in the dead of winter. Cabin Devín is technologically detached from the grid, operating as a fully autonomous, four-season refuge.
The brilliant energy system pairs high-efficiency photovoltaic panels with heavy-duty battery storage and a reliable gas-powered backup. To optimize resources, clever hybrid appliances automatically switch from electricity to gas the second the battery drops below a critical threshold, keeping the lights on and the heating perfectly adapted to the available power without sacrificing comfort.
The climate control is equally state-of-the-art. Service water and separate wastewater tanks are cleverly concealed within the raised floorboards.
To prevent summer overheating, an intelligent ventilation system draws naturally cooled air from beneath the northern floor and exhausts warm air via a heat recovery unit near the skylight.
In the winter, the system operates bi-directionally, constantly monitored by CO₂ and humidity sensors to guarantee the perfect indoor climate.
